Upon reaching Grant Park, the banners have been used to defend a bunch of rioters who ready to ambush police, placing up umbrellas, getting ready projectiles and turning into black clothes. The “peaceable” protesters appeared to maneuver in entrance of the rioters intentionally, to defend them from the view of the law enforcement officials guarding the Columbus statue close by.

The rioters then moved in what police described as “a platoon-like vogue” towards the statue, utilizing the protest banners as cowl. The PVC pipe was then faraway from the banners and sharpened into weapons for use towards law enforcement officials. Rioters distributed “weapons” — projectiles akin to rocks, frozen cans, and frozen water bottles — all through the gang. Additionally they restocked the weapons all through the confrontation with police, distributing them from buying carts.

Brown emphasised that diverting police assets to protests “places lives in danger on our South and West sides,” the largely African American areas of town through which murders and gang violence are usually at their most intense.

“Now we should assume that there could also be mobs working with peaceable protesters to inflict violence,” Brown stated.

Requested whether or not the protest organizers have been conscious that violent people meant to make use of the peaceable demonstration to assault police, Superintendent Brown stated: “God, I hope not. Nevertheless it positive appears prefer it.”
